Alfeizerão Villa

Alfeizerão, from the Arabic Al-cheizandoam means 'cane' or 'reed'.
Ancient sea port of the Cistercian Coutos, Alfeizerão is an example of the ability the monks had to gain land from the sea and also as an example of how they prepare the fields of this region for farming. However, Alfeizerão is famous for its moist sponge cake, a recipe that the nuns of Cós would have taught the local ladies but that on a visit from King D. Carlos they would have taken the cake out of the oven beforehand, leaving it creamy inside. And it was this delicious cake that became known. Internationally, even today this moisty cake is produced by several houses, two of which are recognized for keeping the traditíonal recipe.
